It does not apply to work in respect of which a building notice or initial notice has been given to a local authority before 20 December 2022, or full plans have been deposited with a local authority before that day, provided the work is started on site within the period of 12 months beginning with that day. A separate Approved Document, Approved Document R - Volume 2, provides guidance on the requirements for in-building physical infrastructure for high-speed electronic communication networks when new buildings are erected or when existing buildings are subject to major renovation works.

Approved Document M has been divided into two volumes. ADM volume 1 covers dwellings and this volume - ADM volume 2 - covers buildings other than dwellings. This document provides guidance on the ease of access to, and use of, buildings other than dwellings, including facilities for disabled visitors or occupants. Guidance on the use of ramps and steps is covered to provide ease of access, with information including safe degrees of pitch and dimensions when building a wheelchair accessible facility. The construction of accessible stairs and corridors is also addressed, including the safe height of stairs and the accessible width of both corridors and stairs. Approved Document M volume 2 also includes guidance on the access and sanitary conveniences to extensions of buildings other than dwellings. Building regulations for access to and use of buildings in dwellings and buildings other than dwellings and provides a baseline for accessibility in the built environment. Volume 1: The 2015 edition with 2016 amendments of 'Approved Document M: access to and use of buildings Volume 1: dwellings' only covers dwellings and contains updated guidance. In particular, it introduces 3 categories of dwellings: *category 1: visitable dwellings *category 2: accessible and adaptable dwellings *category 3: wheelchair user dwelling *categories 2 and 3 apply only where required by planning permission. The 2015 edition with 2016 amendments took effect on 1 March 2016 for use in England.

Approved Document G (ADG) provides guidance on the supply of water to a property, including water safety, hot water supply, sanitation and water efficiency. The guidance focuses on the supply of sanitary, drinkable water to buildings, including cold drinking water, hot water supplied to bathroom appliances including baths, showers and sinks next to toilets (or in an adjoining room) and to food preparation areas in kitchens, and any water needed for the purposes of washing. Hot water systems also require extra safety precautions when they are unvented. This 2015 edition of ADG incorporates the 2016 amendments, made to section G2: Water Efficiency, which requires the water efficiency calculator to be completed for new dwellings where a shower will not be provided.

Approved Document E: Resistance to the passage of sound (this is the current edition: it is the 2003 edition, reprinted 2011 with slight revisions to references). 1. Following the "James Review of Education Capital" in 2011, DfE have been reviewing their library of design guidance for school buildings with the objective of simplification. 2. The revised Building Bulletin 93, "Acoustic design of schools: performance standards" was published on 18th December 2014. 3. The new edition is designed to: (a) Make the Building Regulations easier to apply and remove the minor problems that have been identified during their 10 years of existence; (b) Revise effective minimum standards for refurbishment work. These standards will also be compliance standards for changes of use, e.g. from an office to a school; (c) Reduce design time and make building control approval easier, by setting refurbishment standards as a baseline for alternative performance standards and removing the need for building control bodies to make qualitative judgements about open-plan spaces.
